Re-Energizing the Future Landscape for Rural Appraisers

Wednesday, August 26, 2026

9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

The rural appraisal profession is at a critical inflection point. As experienced appraisers retire and regulatory, technological, and market demands continue to evolve, Farm Credit institutions face growing pressure to recruit, develop, and retain the next generation of high-quality rural appraisal talent. This one-hour session is designed specifically for appraisal leaders and will focus on how the profession—and the organizations they depend on—can re-energize the future rural appraiser experience from entry to excellence. Rather than viewing education, standards, and employment as separate silos, this session challenges participants to think holistically about the end-to-end experience of the future rural appraiser—from first exposure to full professional maturity. Participants will leave with actionable insights, shared accountability considerations, and practical ideas they can apply within their appraisal departments to strengthen talent pipelines, improve appraisal quality, and support long-term succession planning across the Farm Credit System.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Recruitment and Retention of Talent: Examining current challenges in attracting new professionals to rural appraisal, generational expectations, and what institutions can do to position appraisal careers as compelling, sustainable, and mission-driven.
  2. Improving the Quality of Education and Experience: Assessing whether today’s education, training pathways, and experience requirements are producing appraisers who are prepared for real-world complexity—and where gaps may exist between theory, regulation, and practice.
  3. Strengthening Practical Application and Entry into the Field: Focusing on onboarding, mentorship, supervision models, and early-career development to ensure new appraisers are not just credentialed, but confident, competent, and effective.
