Spring is often a reminder of what’s been quietly building beneath the surface for the past several months, or even the past year. The behind-the-scenes efforts begin to take shape and come to fruition. Stewardship works the same way: deliberate, sustained, and always forward-looking. And just as growth in nature doesn’t happen by accident, neither does the kind of organizational resilience that positions Farm Credit institutions to thrive over the long term. That’s why risk management, at its best, isn’t simply about protection. It’s a strategic driver of sustainable growth.
Stewardship is Growth in Action
Each year, the release of the Stewardship Report offers a moment to do two things at once: look back at what’s working, and look forward to what’s possible. The 2026 Stewardship Report, released in April, is timely evidence that the philosophy behind our work is producing real results. Serving as much more than a recap of the year, the Report is proof that sustainable growth is possible when Farm Credit comes together and works as one.
That intentionality has been years in the making. Since 2022, the Risk Management and Insurance Services (RMIS) team at FCCS has been executing on a long-term strategic vision for the Farm Credit Captive Insurance Company (the Captive). One that doesn’t measure success in quarters, but in decades. The work underway today is part of a roadmap that will continue to evolve and strengthen over the next ten years and beyond, ensuring that the Captive remains a dynamic, forward-thinking, responsive resource for the entire Farm Credit System.
Risk Management as a Long-Term Growth Mindset
Too often, risk management is framed narrowly — as a safety net, a line of defense, or a necessary cost of doing business. But at FCCS, we see it differently. Risk management is part of our business strategy. And when it’s executed well, it creates the conditions for growth across every dimension of an organization.
Financially, thoughtful risk management protects and optimizes resources across the Farm Credit System. This ensures that institutions aren’t just guarding against loss, but positioning themselves to invest, expand, and serve their members with confidence.
Operationally, it builds the kind of resilience and consistency that allows institutions to function at their best. One of the most meaningful benefits of the Captive is that it alleviates much of the administrative work associated with insurance and risk management — freeing Farm Credit institutions to redirect their energy toward supporting Farm Credit borrowers and fulfilling their core mission.
Organizationally, access to strong risk data and trusted advisory relationships empowers leaders to make informed decisions, even in uncertain conditions.
At the center of all of this is the Farm Credit Captive, a structural embodiment of the long-term growth mindset. With nearly 40 years of history – and a collaborative partnership with Farm Credit spanning more than 50 years – the Captive is not a new concept. It’s a proven one that continues to evolve alongside the changing needs of the System.
The RMIS Team: Building the Relationships That Make It Work
Behind every data point, every risk report, and every Stewardship metric is a team that is actively and personally engaged with institutions across the Farm Credit System. The RMIS team’s work is far beyond transactional. It’s relational, and it’s strategic.
Through Strategic Account Management (SAM) meetings, the RMIS team connects with Farm Credit institutions both in-person and virtually. This allows FCCS to meet institutions where they are — whether that’s at a board presentation, a System conference, or a one-on-one strategy session. This is a dimension of the partnership that sometimes gets overlooked: the RMIS team is a dedicated partner, who serves a single client – the Farm Credit System – where success is shared and is mutually beneficial.
That partnership is what connects data to strategy, and strategy to growth. Sustainable growth does not come from tools and technology alone. It comes from trusted relationships built over time, with people who understand your institution’s goals as well as you do.

With An Eye on the Prize
New strategies, new solutions, and new growth are what describe the ongoing work of both the RMIS team and how the Captive operates every day. Stewardship is not a destination; it’s a commitment that renews itself season after season, year after year. As we look down the road, we remain focused on the long view: building the partnerships, refining the strategies, and delivering the solutions that help Farm Credit institutions grow with confidence and purpose.
