14 leaders. 12 months. One incredible journey.
Over the past year, participants in the FCCS Leading Leaders program have explored what it means to lead with clarity, confidence, and compassion — not just in theory, but in practice. Their capstone projects, developed and implemented across eight Farm Credit Associations, put leadership learning into action through strategic initiatives designed to strengthen culture, drive performance, and inspire change.
What made these projects stand out wasn’t just their outcomes, but the way each leader navigated complexity, uncertainty, and change with purpose and adaptability. As one participant reflected, “Everything I learned this year can’t be put on a dashboard.”
Turning Learning into Leadership
From building more efficient systems to creating more connected cultures, each project reflected the realities of leading through change — where plans evolve, perspectives shift, and leadership shows up in the moments that matter most. Common threads across projects included:
Staying intentional and adaptable as circumstances changed
Building trust through transparency and collaboration
Focusing on process and purpose, not just results
These lessons came to life through a variety of innovative projects, including:
Spotlight 1: Building a Cost-Conscious Culture at AgCarolina Farm Credit
Facing pressure on capital and efficiency post-merger, a three-member team of leaders took on the challenge of building a more cost-conscious culture - one grounded in transparency, accountability, and shared ownership.
Their project introduced zero-based and branch-level budgeting, inviting leaders across the organization to re-examine spending habits and align financial decisions with core values. Along the way, they facilitated candid, trust-building conversations between senior leaders and teams — fostering both financial stewardship and cultural alignment.
When early analysis showed their original cost-reduction goal could risk long-term growth and morale, the team demonstrated strategic agility by pivoting to a balanced, values-driven approach. Their leadership exemplified how courage, empathy, and collaboration can turn financial discipline into a cultural strength.
“This project reminded us that leadership isn’t about cutting costs — it’s about inspiring ownership and trust in every decision.” - Courtney Stewart, Gerald Wilson, and Matt McFarlin
Spotlight 2: Streamlining Success — Optimizing Roles for Better Outcomes
The team at AgSouth Farm Credit focused their project on aligning people, processes, and technology to support a relationship-centered culture. By streamlining loan processes and redistributing tasks, the team created space for lenders to spend more time in the field — deepening client connections, improving productivity, and driving growth.
The effort showcased how operational decisions can reinforce organizational values and strengthen both employee and client experiences.
Spotlight 3: Listening as a Leadership Strategy — The Voice of Customer Assessment
At FCS Financial, Kate Lambert launched a comprehensive review of how customer feedback was gathered, shared, and acted upon. The insight? Valuable data existed everywhere — but too often stayed siloed. By improving the way insights were communicated across departments, the project reinforced a key leadership truth: siloed information is costly, and transparency builds trust.
Leadership in Every Lesson
While each project was unique, the collective experience revealed powerful lessons about leadership in action. Participants discovered that clarity often comes from conversation, confidence grows from collaboration, and compassion is built through empathy — especially when plans change or challenges arise.
They also learned that constraints can fuel creativity, it takes courage to speak up and clarify expectations, and meaningful leadership is less about control and more about connection.
Clarity. Confidence. Compassion.
The Leading Leaders journey reminded us that leadership isn’t a title or a skillset — it’s a language we practice every day. And this year’s capstone projects proved that when leaders communicate with clarity, act with confidence, and lead with compassion, they don’t just drive results — they shape culture, inspire trust, and create lasting impact.
